About [Ed]Tech for the 99%

[Ed]Tech for the 99% is a growing international community of parents, educators, researchers and practitioners who believe that technology in education should serve children, teachers and society—not the other way around.

The initiative began as a reading group founded by EDDS Institute’s founder Velislava Hillman, Kali Thompson and Molly Esquivel. What started as conversations about research, education and technology has grown into a wider community dedicated to making evidence accessible, practical and useful for everyone who cares about children’s learning and wellbeing.

The name is inspired by Feminism for the 99% by Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi Bhattacharya and Nancy Fraser. Like the authors, the initiative is less concerned with abstract debates than with exploring practical questions about the kind of education societies wish to build and have for their children—and the steps needed to get there. In this context “[Ed]Tech for the 99%” reflects a commitment to ensuring that educational technology is shaped by the needs of children, families and educators, not by commercial interests or technological trends.

The monthly webinar series brings together leading researchers, teachers, school leaders, policymakers and advocates to explore some of the most pressing questions facing education today. These are not the typical academic lectures but intentionally created semi-formal and accessible conversations designed to help participants understand the evidence, ask questions and learn from one another.

Whether you are a pre-service or practising educator, a parent/caregiver or family member, a school leader, researcher or simply someone who cares about children’s education and wellbeing, you are warmly invited to join the community.
