Digital technologies and AI-infused products are now embedded across childhood — from early learning to everyday activities. While these tools offer many potential opportunities, there is also growing evidence of negative impacts on children’s health, development and well-being.
Schools are adopting educational technologies and generative AI at pace, often without clarity on safety or long-term consequences. At the same time, families, educators and policymakers are struggling to distinguish between what is genuinely beneficial and what may be harmful.
Gathering insights on EdTech and AI: addressing well-being and policy challenges
This online consultation event was convened to bring those perspectives. The aim of the consultation was to gather grounded insights from health professionals, educators, researchers, school leaders and policy experts from across Europe, and to understand the real pressures, risks and uncertainties surrounding the growing use of EdTech and AI with children. More specifically, the objectives were to identify the key well-being concerns, outline the regulatory and evidence gaps, and shape priorities for future guidance, independent oversight and policy development.
The full recording of the session is now available below.
Translating insights into action
The consultation was designed to capture these realities and translate them into practical next steps. The expected output will include a synthesis of the evidence and lived experiences shared during the event, a clear articulation of the key risks and gaps in current practice and regulation, and a set of policy recommendations for addressing governance and oversight of EdTech and AI in education.
All this will feed into an upcoming report intended to inform policymakers, support schools, and contribute to the development of independent standards for child well-being in digital environments.
